The School of Social Work has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Consultant.
The Social Development Research Group programmer assists with all aspects of survey research projects, with a primary focus on developing, testing, and implementing online, CATI, and CAPI surveys using Unicom’s IBM SPSS Data Collection V7 software, and on building and managing relational databases to track respondents in longitudinal studies. This position supports a variety of research requests in the fields of social science, health, government, and other fields. The role directly supports the University of Washington’s primary research objective.
Duties and Responsibilities include: •Assist in development of study questionnaire documents. Consult with project teams and provide technical assistance.(5%) •Design, develop, manage testing, and implement complex multi-mode surveys (web, CATI, CAPI, paper), including all related surveying efforts, including field period reporting tools used by the data collection staff.(40%) •Working in conjunction with the Network Administrator, act as the Unicom Data Collection 7 software (formerly IBM SPSS Data Collection 7) expert at SDRG (as needed) •Design, build, and manage database tools for tracking and managing research subjects on longitudinal studies using Microsoft infrastructure (40%) •Perform daily troubleshooting and problem solving of database and survey issues encountered by data collection and/or data management staff in order to maintain usability and functionality.(3%) •Create reports and run ad hoc queries within databases in response to user needs during field periods. Respond in timely manner and follow up to make sure results are as needed (2%) •Work independently and maintain high levels of quality across multiple projects within strict and sometimes short timelines and under the supervision of the Survey Research Division Director. •Continually communicate with project team members regarding programming status, database management status, and progress of changes/updates.(5%) •Serve as the primary point of contact with internal and external collaborators for discussing and implementing technology solutions for various projects.(5%) •Ensure SDRG utilizes the best survey and tracking database tools available: Investigate other survey tool platforms & determine best platform to meet organizational needs; develop budget and action plan to implement a new/different survey tool platform, if warranted; implement plan to upgrade survey tool platform, (as needed)
Requirements: •Bachelor's degree in computer science, information sciences, or related field and 3 years of relevant work experience. Equivalent experience may substitute for education requirement. •Experience developing database solutions with complex data structures or user interfaces. •Experience with HTML & CSS, and one or more web scripting languages. •Experience with object-oriented programming/Visual Basic. SQL Server, developing reporting tools using Excel. •High attention to detail and ability to perform accurate work in a self-directed setting. •Excellent time management and interpersonal and written communication skills. •Ability to continually balance work priorities across multiple projects
Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum requirements.
Desired: •Experience with survey development and data management. •Experience with academic research environments.
