The Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, housed in the School of Public Health, has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Consultant.  The Researcher will be a staff scientist in the PATHWAYS Data Center, based at the University of Washington, Seattle. Data Center scientists work closely with PATHWAYS investigators at various institutions, including Seattle Children’s Research Institute, the University of California, San Francisco, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, and others. PATHWAYS is part of the Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) consortium (www.echochildren.org).

The Research Consultant Grade will support an established research program’s management of an extensive established database of air quality measurements, geographic variables, air pollution exposure modeling outputs, and health data. The person in this position will be expected to carry out high quality, accurate work in a multi-faceted research environment where command of quantitative details is essential. The ideal candidate will be organized, flexible, and self-motivated with a desire to learn, good communication skills, and the ability to work and thrive in a diverse, multi-faceted academic research environment.

Responsibilities include:
•Data processing and database management including writing processing code.
•Developing, quality checking, and distributing complex data sets to be used in epidemiological and statistical analyses.
•Under the guidance of experienced scientists, preforming epidemiological and/or statistical analyses.
•Conducting research on new data management and data processing tools and ways to implement them
•Attending and contributing in regular data team meetings and project staff meetings.

Requirements:

Master’s Degree in computer science, statistics, biostatistics, geography, public health or related field and a minimum of two years of work experience developing code in R. Other requirements include a demonstrated facility with analytic tasks, a strong quantitative aptitude, and the ability to interpret complex analytic information.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration.

Desired:

Preferred skills include previous experience using, building, and/or maintaining MySQL and/or PostgreSQL databases of quantitative information, the Python interface to ArcGIS applications, and/or QGIS, three or more years of experience with R, experience using collaborative software development tools such as Git, experience with SQL, SAS, and/or Python, previous experience with ArcGIS tools, and an interest in public health research including impacts of air pollution on health. Also a plus is experience contributing to scientific manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals.
