HIPRC Investigators are actively involved in examining causes and consequences of firearm violence and injury and evaluating the implementation and effectiveness of public policy for firearm violence and injury prevention.

This Research Consultant will work closely with FIPRP investigators and Research Scientists at HIPRC on multiple projects. FIPRP is a highly visible research program, funded by the State of Washington and other entities. The research consultant position is the primary individual responsible for developing, providing oversight of collection, review, and analysis of the firearms data in the Firearm Injury & Policy Research Program.  The ideal candidate has strong analytical skills, an interest in firearm policy, and a demonstrated ability to use complex analyses to develop sound policy. In this position, you will have autonomy over your work and contribution, high levels of collaboration with scholars across many disciplines (e.g., public health, law, epidemiology, economics, and medicine), and the opportunity to work remotely.

Research projects will include:

• Interventions to improve safe storage of firearms, prevent firearm injury, and reduce recidivism
• Observational studies on risk factors for firearm injury/death among priority populations
• Effect of laws and public policy changes on firearm injuries and deaths

The Research Consultant is responsible for:

• Reviewing, collecting, and conducting advanced analyses on data for research projects = 60%
• Provide methodologic expertise on study design and data collection for grant proposals and other research projects in the areas of firearm research described above = 20%
• Provide quality control on data collection methods and implementation = 20%
This position reports to HIPRC Director, Monica Vavilala, MD, with additional supervision provided by FIPRP director. The position works under limited supervision and must demonstrate an ability to work independently with sound judgment. Must also be an excellent collaborator be able to work effectively as a member of a team under technical guidance of supervisor.

Position Complexities:

The research consultant position is the primary individual responsible for developing, providing oversight of collection, review and analysis of the firearms data in the Firearm Injury & Policy Research Program.  This individual must have strong analytic skills and by providing data that leads toward sound policy development. This is a highly visible research program, funded, in part, by the State as well as other entities.  This individual must have a strong analytical foundation and technical skills, strong interest in this area of research and the ability to turn data into useful information. This individual will be working quite independently but must mesh development of data methodology with other aspects of the research being conducted.

Position Dimensions and Impact to the University:

The University of Washington’s Harborview Injury Prevention & Research Center (HIPRC) is a nationally recognized leader in the field of injury and injury prevention research, education, training and community outreach. HIPRC is jointly supported by the UW School of Medicine and Harborview Medical Center. HIPRC’s multi-disciplinary membership includes faculty members from the UW Schools of Medicine, Public Health, Social Work, Nursing, Engineering, Pharmacy, and Law. Our faculty and staff are devoted to conducting research, education, and prevention programs aimed at diminishing the personal impact of trauma, and broadening the effectiveness of injury prevention and treatment programs regionally and nationally.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reviewing, analyzing and conducting advanced data analyses for research projects = 60%

•Create and implement data intake processes and systems, per needs of individual research projects.
•Conduct data review and analysis of data for firearm research projects (as described above) led by the FIPRP investigators.
Provide methodologic expertise on study design and data collection for research grant proposals and other firearm research projects in the areas of firearm research = 20%
•Contribute to the design, implementation, and maintenance of the information infrastructure within HIPRC in support of research projects on the topic of firearm violence and injury prevention and control.
• Provide methodologic expertise on study design and data collection for firearm research projects topics.
•Create sophisticated and inter-related instruments and surveys for the purpose of conducting firearm research and evaluation of public policy

Provide quality control on data collection methods, implementation = 20%

•Manage data collection and data retrieval systems;
•Assess and verify data quality for research, publications, and presentations.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Master’s level degree in math, statistics, epidemiology, quantitative health or social sciences, or other relevant field
Type and Years of Experience: Minimum of 1 year of increasing responsibility and relevant experience in study design, research data management and analysis; preferably in firearm violence or other injury control research.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Experience in instrument and survey design/development (e.g., REDCap, Qualtrics, or similar)
• Training and experience with empirical research (e.g., case-control studies, quasi-random experimental studies, differences-in-differences techniques, or similar).
• Able to provide inferential statistics by applying advanced analytic skills
• Proficient with statistical software including one (and preferably several) of following packages: Stata, R, SPSS, SAS, SQL, ArcGIS, NVivo, and Atlas.ti.
• Ability to think flexibly about the use of analytic methods and demonstrated openness to working on research projects that integrate qualitative and quantitative research methods.
• Collaborative and proactive in decision-making to complete complex research studies.
• Strong organizational abilities, flexibility, problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work on multiple projects (6-12) simultaneously.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Comfortable with juggling demands of a busy, frequently changing plan of work in a professional manner, while exhibiting sound judgment about priorities and work scope.
• Able to progress research and projects with limited supervision and must demonstrate an ability to work independently with sound judgment.
• Motivation to learn and apply unfamiliar methodological approaches with self-directed learning.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE

• PhD-strongly preferred in epidemiology or other relevant field
• 4 or more years in research data analysis
• Expertise in deterministic and probabilistic linkages of large databases (LinkPlus, LinkKing, LinkSolv, or equivalent software)
• Commitment to the prevention of firearm injury and harm.
