The Harborview Injury Prevention & Research Center (HIPRC) is seeking a Research Consultant to serve as Associate Director of HIPRC’s Research Core Team. This person is primarily responsible for collaborating with faculty, fellows, and staff at HIPRC to assist with the development and management of an injury-related program of research including conducting the data analysis. They will provide methodological expertise on study design and data collection approaches and assist HIPRC faculty and trainees with research projects and proposals. The Associate Director will provide administrative leadership to the Research Core team.  This position reports to the HIPRC Director with a strong matrixed relationship to the Research Core Director.  We seek candidates who work effectively as a member of a team and work independently with limited supervision.

Responsibilities are as follows:

Research Projects Consultation – 90%

Research Core Leadership Team – 10%

The Research Consultant facilitates the design, implementation, and maintenance of the information infrastructure within HIPRC. The research consultant must have sophisticated writing skills to be able to communicate clearly and effectively with faculty and fellows from different disciplines and from different training backgrounds both in person and via email. This position will work directly with faculty investigators, post-doctoral fellows and scientific collaborators to achieve research study aims. This position provides high-level advanced data analysis support and must be able to advise scientist colleagues on the best methods for particular projects and analysis.

The Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Center (HIPRC) is a worldwide leader in injury cause and prevention research. Founded in 1985, we are affiliated with the University of Washington and Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Our faculty and staff are devoted to conducting research, education, and prevention programs aimed at diminishing the personal impact of trauma, and broadening the effectiveness of injury prevention and treatment programs regionally and nationally. Our research priorities include global injury, falls prevention, geriatric trauma, injury care, safe and active transport, traumatic brain injury, and violence. We seek a full-time epidemiologist or health services research consultant to serve as Associate Director of HIPRC’s Research Core.

The Research Consultant role contributes to the overall success of research projects at HIPRC, with the potential to lead to future grant opportunities benefitting both HIPRC and UW. The HIPRC brings significant research funds to Harborview and the University while also increasing awareness and establishing the UW and Harborview as cutting-edge research institutions in injury cause and prevention.  The collaboration of pediatric, adult and global health faculty and programs is representative of the collaborative nature of the University's research programs. HIPRC has advocated for preventions of traumatic brain injury and other areas that have led to policy changes across the country.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Research Projects Consultation – 90%

•Collaborate with faculty and staff at HIPRC to assist with the development and management of an injury-related program of research including conducting the data analysis
•Provide methodologic expertise to HIPRC affiliated faculty and trainees on study design, data collection, and data analysis.
•Make significant content contributions to the preparation of research proposals, internal reports, presentations, and publications.
•Contribute to the design, implementation, and maintenance of the information infrastructure within HIPRC in support of research projects.
•Conduct complex and advanced data qualitative and quantitative analysis for projects led by HIPRC affiliated faculty.
•Provide ready access to project data for PIs

Research Core Leadership Team - 10%

•Administratively support Research Core operations, including planning and management of Research Core staff time and effort on projects
•Organize and participate in regularly scheduled meetings with Research Core staff and leadership
•Participate in other HIPRC education, training, and community outreach activities that might benefit from or draw upon the expertise of the Research Core.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

•Master's degree in quantitative health or social sciences, preferably in epidemiology
•Minimum of 3 years of increasingly responsible and relevant experience in study design and research data management and analysis, preferably in injury research

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

•Experience working on research projects with different study designs and data collection systems
•Solid understanding of empirical research, including qualitative and quantitative analytical research skills
•Openness to working on research projects that integrate qualitative and quantitative research methods
•Demonstrated ability to provide inferential statistics by applying advanced analytic skills to a variety of research projects
•Proficiency with relational database, data linkage, and statistical software including one (and preferably several) of the following packages: REDCap, SQL, Stata, R, SPSS, SAS, ArcGIS, and Microsoft Access
•Collaborative orientation, flexibility, and the ability to be proactive in decision making and carrying out work
•Strong organizational abilities, problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously
•Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; comfortable communicating one-on-one or in groups of both internal and external constituents

DESIRED:

•Doctoral degree in quantitative health or social sciences, preferably in epidemiology
•Experience managing research teams or supervising research staff
•Expertise in deterministic and probabilistic linkages of large databases
•Experience working with interdisciplinary researchers
•Experience working in an academic research environment
•Interest in trauma and injury control research
