CENTER FOR RURAL ENGAGEMENT (BL-CFRE-IUBLA)

The IU Center for Rural Engagement improves the lives of Hoosiers through collaborative initiatives that discover and deploy scalable and flexible solutions to common challenges facing rural communities. Working in full-spectrum community innovation through research, community-engaged teaching and student service, the center ensures long-term success by building vision, harnessing assets, and cultivating sustainable leadership structures within the communities with which it engages. Department Specific Responsibilities

• Responsible for directing and operationalizing all student-based initiatives at the CRE, including the Sustaining Hoosier Communities (SHC) Program. The DSE will
• Creates, maintains, and improves innovative programs for students in rural communities by matching the assets and needs of local communities with student opportunities as outlined in Indiana University's 2030 Plan. This may include involvement in campus task forces and committees dealing with community engagement and workforce development as it relates to student opportunities.
• Works in close partnership with the CRE Community Initiatives (CI) team and reporting to the Deputy Director.
• Develops a detailed sense of each community's assets, needs, project ideas, and capacity for matching with SHC and other programs.
• Consults with the Director of Campus Partnerships, the DSE leverages a detailed understanding of the university's core strengths and resources to match those resources with the community-identified needs and opportunities.
• Collaborates with the CI team to build and maintain relationships with communities not selected as the annual SHC partner; fosters opportunities for inter-county peer mentorship.
• Supports capacity development for potential future SHC communities, and ensures post-partnership support and project sustainability after an SHC collaboration year has ended.
  
• Works and requires concerted effort in leveraging the existing strong working relationships with county partners and stakeholders and facilitating an atmosphere of trust for IU faculty, staff, and students working in the community.
• Strives to become established as a trusted member of the campus-community team by representing the CRE at events and meetings in communities and on campus, knowing the relevant partners at IU and in the counties, and by being sensitive to the complexities that drive those entities.
• Communicates frequently/remotely and in-person with community leaders and project leads. Builds and leverages existing CRE relationships with community leaders in rural Indiana to understand community needs and concerns and to help potential communities prepare for the annual SHC community selection process and other student opportunities.

General Responsibilities

• Leads and implements large-scale advancement initiatives with key stakeholders and leaders in the public and private sector.
• Identifies potential opportunities and cultivates relationships engaging with relevant stakeholders to develop project scope.
• Develops deep understanding of related issues, assets, and opportunities to formulate project outcomes in collaboration with unit leadership and partners. Stay currents on emerging needs.
• Matches identified needs with university academic and operational experts as well as external assets and resources.
• Manages budgets; may supervise staff in project operations.
• Serves as a primary point of contact on project needs and priorities interacting with diverse constituencies.
• Develops and maintains systems for selecting, tracking, and assessing projects and their outcomes and impact.
• May provide guidance to lower-level Institutional Advancement Consultants.

EDUCATION

Required

• Bachelor's degree in related field

Preferred

• Master's degree in related field

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

• 5 years experience in outreach, engagement, public relations, or related field

Preferred

• 5 years of experience in recruitment and professional placement, higher education, or related field of work
• Demonstrates success with student engagement, academic initiatives, participatory action research, and/or community engagement
• Spanish and/or Haitian Creole fluency

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Will be expected to travel throughout the state so incumbent must have a valid driver's license and the ability to be insured by Indiana University.
