Position Overview:
The Psychiatric Consultant at Carleton is a part-time, paid-hourly, non-benefit earning consultant position. This position provides psychiatric care to college students (17-24 years old) independently, within an integrated, multidisciplinary, collaborative team environment of Nurse Practitioners, Psychologists/Counselors, and a consulting Dietitian.
Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities:
Provide psychiatric assessment and diagnostic evaluations, medication evaluation and follow-up, and general mental health education to students referred by medical or counseling staff in SHAC
Order lab work as needed
Review patients’ records and files to determine the progress, effectiveness, and appropriateness of treatment services offered
Provide referrals of counseling/psychiatry cases which exceed the SHAC scope of practice
Assist in emergency management and crisis response services to students, including hospitalization, in collaboration with other SHAC staff
Identify best practices for medical care according to established professional standards.
Provide intermittent, brief phone or text consultations regarding medication problems to assist students and staff when not on-site
Maintain accurate and timely clinical treatment records in the electronic health record
Provide care and programs with sensitivity to serving the needs of a diverse student population and creating an inclusive healthcare environment.
Consult with and make referrals to other members of the SHAC staff and to off-campus providers as appropriate.
Collaborate with other campus departments in meeting the health needs of students.
This position is subject to required background screenings and previous employment checks.
Must have the ability to understand and follow written and oral work instructions, operations, safety procedures, and hazardous labels.

Required Education/Degree:
Must be either:
Board certified physician in psychiatry and be licensed to practice medicine in the State of Minnesota
OR
An Advanced Practice Registered Nurse with certification as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner or Psychiatric Clinical Nurse Specialist and be licensed as an APRN in the State of MN
Required License or Certification:
Valid DEA certificate
Required to carry own liability insurance
